BABY (ADDITIONAL EDITOR) (2024) (SHORT FILM)
Baby begins in the daytime, in a brightly lit corner shop. Our protagonist Axel (early 20s) stares into the shelves on the verge of violence. Throughout the piece we hardly hear him speak. He exists only in feeling. Red (also early 20s) joins him, noticing the rage burning under his surface. They buy alcohol and bring it back to the house party; a derelict looking council flat. Red talks to some of her friends about how hard things have been for her and Axel. One of her friends says ‘I’d kill myself if my dad died’ - we now understand Axel’s behaviour. We cut between Axel trying to start fights, and Red, high on ket, searching for him. She finds Axel hiding under his bed. Upset, as this party was supposed to be a chance for him to meet her friends, they argue into tears. They have existed in a bubble since his dad died, and this was her attempt to burst that. Red wakes up at 6am on a mattress on the balcony outside, and searches for Axel. She finds him in the bath with his socks on. Axel has a flashback to the first scene where he is in the corner shop, but he is dripping wet from the bath. Axel cries in the bath, Red utters a single loaded word ‘BABY’ and climbs into the bath fully clothed to hold him. He entirely breaks down, water crashes onto water. Together in the bath they share a cigarette and this moment forever.
